SAT Math: Systems with No Solution or Infinitely Many Solutions

You often don't need to solve the system. Comparing the coefficients can tell you what you need.

Two lines can meet once, never, or be the same line. For a system written as , compare the ratios.

  1. Different slopes: one solution.
  2. Same slope, different lines: no solution.
  3. Same line: infinitely many solutions.

Find so the system has no solution: and

The second coefficient is 2 times the first, so match : .

With , doubling the first equation gives , not 10. The lines are parallel, so .

Find so the system has infinitely many solutions: and

is 3 times , and 15 is 3 times 5.

So every term must be tripled: .

Common mistake

Stopping once the and coefficients match.

Matching coefficients only means the slopes are equal. Now check the constants: if they also match, the lines are the same. If they don't, there's no solution.
