How to Do Long Division Without Getting Lost

Long division is the same four moves, repeated until there are no digits left.

Work from left to right, one place at a time. Every digit you bring down needs a digit in the answer.

The method

  1. Divide: how many times does the divisor fit?
  2. Multiply: write what you used.
  3. Subtract: see what's left.
  4. Bring down the next digit, then repeat.

Worked examples

Example:

6 fits into 8 once. . Bring down 5 to make 25.

6 fits into 25 four times. . Bring down 2 to make 12.

6 fits into 12 twice. .

The answer is 142. Check: .

With a remainder:

8 doesn't fit into 4, so start with 43. It fits 5 times. . Bring down 7 to make 37.

8 fits into 37 four times. .

The answer is 54 remainder 5. Check: .

Common mistake

After 6 goes into 6, you bring down 1. Since 6 doesn't fit into 1, the answer needs a 0 in that place. The correct answer is 102, and .
