How to Solve Ratios and Proportions

A ratio compares two amounts. A proportion says two ratios are equal, so you can find what's missing.

The key is keeping the same kind of quantity in the same position. If cups are on top in one ratio, cups go on top in the other.

Worked examples

Solve a proportion:

4 was multiplied by 5 to get 20.

Do the same to the top: .

A recipe uses 2 cups of flour for 5 servings. How much for 20 servings?

cups.

Six notebooks cost $18. How much do 10 cost?

Find the unit rate: dollars each.

dollars.

Common mistake
