ACT Math Review: Mean, Median and Mode

Three ways to describe a set of numbers. The target-average question is where the mean gets useful.

  1. Mean: add the values and divide by how many there are.
  2. Median: put them in order and take the middle one.
  3. Mode: the value that appears most often.

Worked examples

Common mistake

The median of 9, 2, 5 is 2, because it's in the middle.
