Count what you want, count everything possible, and watch whether the total changes.

Worked examples

A bag holds 3 red and 5 blue marbles. Find the chance of red.

There are 8 marbles in total.

Flip two coins. Find the chance of at least one heads.

The outcomes are HH, HT, TH and TT.

Three of the four have a heads, so .

Pick 2 marbles from that bag without replacing them. Find the chance both are red.

First pick:

Second pick: 2 red remain out of 7, so .

Common mistake

Without replacement, the chance of two reds is .

That would be true only if you put the first marble back. Once it's gone, both the red count and the total go down.
