LearnAlgebraLinear equations

No solution or infinitely many

Sometimes the variable disappears. What's left tells you everything.

Lesson 5 of 7

Algebra: Linear equations

When the variables cancel, look at what remains. A false statement like means no number works. A true one like means every number works.

2x+12x+4

Move the slider. The two sides never match, because the right side is always 3 more. On a graph, these are parallel lines.

Work through it

Always true: infinitely many solutions.

False: no solution.

Watch out for this

has solution .

Check it: is false. Getting a 0 somewhere doesn't make it a solution.
