17 = 5 \times 3 + 2

Work through it

$4 \times 7 = 28$

$29 - 28 = 1$

The answer is 7 remainder 1.

$8 \times 3 = 24$ , and $8 \times 4 = 32$ is too many.

$23 \div 4 = 5$ remainder 3 means there are 53 pieces.

The remainder is what's left over. Check it: $4 \times 5 + 3 = 23$ .
