Adding a positive moves right, and adding a negative moves left. Subtracting a number is the same as adding its opposite.

a - b = a + (- b)

Work through it

Start at $- 3$ and move 5 to the right.

You land on 2.

Subtracting $- 2$ is the same as adding 2.

$4 + 2 = 6$

$- 3 - 4 = 1$

Subtracting moves left. Start at $- 3$ and move 4 left to get $- 7$ .
