Work through it

$- 3 \times (- 4)$

The signs match, so the answer is positive: 12.

$2 + 3 \times (- 4)$

Multiply first: $3 \times (- 4) = - 12$

$2 + (- 12) = - 10$

Watch out for this

$(- 3)^{2} = - 9$

The parentheses include the negative: $(- 3) (- 3) = 9$ . It's $- 3^{2}$ that equals $- 9$ .
