LearnAlgebraLines and systems

Systems of equations

A solution has to work in both equations at once.

Lesson 4 of 4

Algebra: Lines and systems

Two lines usually cross at one point. That point lies on both, so its and make both equations true. Solving a system means finding it.

and cross at .

Two methods

Work through it

Substitution: and .

is already alone, so replace it in the second equation.

Solve., so

Find .

Answer as a point.

Elimination: and .

Add the equations so cancels.

Solve.

Use it in either equation., so

Elimination with a multiplier: and .

Multiply the second by 2 to match the terms.

Subtract.

Then., so

Parallel lines never meet, so no solution. If both equations are the same line, there are infinitely many.

Watch out for this

Finding and stopping.

A solution is a pair. Find too, then check both equations.

The short version
Use substitution when a variable is already alone. Otherwise multiply so a variable cancels, then add or subtract.
