Exponential functions

Linear adds the same amount. Exponential multiplies by the same factor.

Lesson 2 of 2

Algebra: Radicals and exponential functions

Say you have 100 followers. Gaining 50 a week is linear: 100, 150, 200, 250. Growing by 50% a week is exponential: 100, 150, 225, 337.5. They start the same, and then one runs away.

in orange and in navy. Exponential growth always wins eventually.
: is the value at . means growth, and means decay.

A percent change turns into a multiplier. Growing 8% means multiplying by 1.08. Shrinking 8% means multiplying by 0.92.

Work through it

A $500 deposit earns 4% per year. Write its value after years.

The start is 500.

Growing 4% means times 1.04.

Put it together.

A car worth $20,000 loses 15% of its value each year. Write its value after years.

The start is 20,000.

Losing 15% leaves 85%.

Put it together.

Watch out for this

Writing a 4% growth rate as or .

Keep the original 100% and add 4%: .
