Arithmetic and geometric sequences

Add the same number each time, or multiply by the same number.

Lesson 3 of 3

Algebra: Functions and sequences

A sequence is a list that follows a rule. Two rules cover most of what you'll see. In an arithmetic sequence, you add the same number each time. In a geometric one, you multiply by the same number.

2, 4, 6, 8: add 2 each time. That's arithmetic.
Arithmetic: . Geometric: .

Why ? To reach the 5th term from the 1st, you take 4 steps, not 5.

Work through it

Find the 20th term of 7, 11, 15, 19, ...

The difference is 4.

Take 19 steps from the first term.

Calculate.

Find the 6th term of 3, 6, 12, 24, ...

Each term doubles.

Take 5 steps.

Calculate.

Watch out for this

Using steps rather than .

The first term already takes up position 1. Getting to term takes steps.

The short version
Arithmetic: add the same difference . Geometric: multiply by the same ratio .
